PSST 10th and 11th graders had the opportunity to tour the General Dynamics facility in Healdsburg on November 14th. The tour gave the students a first hand look at a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) field. The tour featured an introduction from the engineering team. The students then moved between five different stations. Each station had one to two engineers that demonstrated different areas of expertise - computer-aided modeling, additive manufacturing (3D printing), inspection, vibration testing and a can crushing experiment. In this last one, students had to make a hypothesis as to how much force it would take to crush different types of cans. Using test equipment, real results were gathered!
The tour culminated with a question and answer session led by same General Dynamics volunteers who facilitated the tour. It was an enlightening event for our students; but we received feedback from the volunteers as well - they had a blast showing off their day-to-day jobs with excited students.
